Timely advice for the crazy Christmas season!
Breastfeeding a newborn can be a challenging experience at the best of times, let alone running a household, working and looking after older siblings at the same time. However, with a few tips and a little planning it can be a very rewarding experience for both you and your new baby. You will even get an excuse to put your feet up once in a while!
Plan Ahead
Think of what you need to achieve in a day and plan around your baby’s feeding and sleeping patterns. Babies are usually more settled in the morning after a good feed, so this may be the best time for you to attend to work that needs doing. The best thing about a baby is that you can usually do things while your baby sleeps or have them near you on a play mat or rocker.
Be Realistic
When breastfeeding a new baby be realistic about what you can achieve and try not to plan too much in the first few months of your baby’s life. Stick to the essentials and live by the to-do list. This will help you to focus on what needs to be done – a must for the sleep deprived brain! Once feeding is established you will feel more confident to take on more.
Buy a pump and express
If you need to spend time away from your baby for work matters it is worth investing in a quality breast pump so you can express breast milk for your baby. Your partner or carer can then give the expressed breast milk in a bottle to feed your baby while you are away. Start freezing and storing your expressed milk so you have a good supply built up when the need arises.
Look after yourself
It is important to eat healthy and nutritious meals while breastfeeding, so have a cook up and freeze easy to prepare meals before your baby arrives. Casseroles, soups and lasagnes are good examples and simply add some crusty bread and salad for a healthy meal. Make sure you drink lots of water to keep your fluids up as well.
Ask for help
Don’t try to be superwoman and do everything yourself! The housework can wait and it is much more important to catch up on sleep and rest while you can. Why not hire a cleaner for the first few months or ask a friend or relative to help out. Except any offers of help or food!
‘Me’ time
It’s important to have time out for things you enjoy, even if it is just a walk around the block, a nice hot bath or a quiet cup of tea. You will feel refreshed and as they say ‘When Mum’s happy, everyone’s happy!
Get support
Find like-minded people that can help support and encourage you while you are breastfeeding. Mums are often the best source of advice and knowing that someone else is going through the same thing can be a big relief!
Remember do your best and try not to be too hard on yourself if things don’t go according to plan. Enjoy the early days with your new baby, because they really do go too fast.

How to Breastfeed in Style
Look at your needs
While pregnant plan ahead and look at your lifestyle to plan your nursing wear and breastfeeding clothes purchases before your baby is born. Are you sporty? Like to socialise? Returning to work? Then think about styles and colours to suit your lifestyle as you’ll be living in them for several months while breastfeeding.
Plan a nursing wear kit
Once you know your needs it’s a good idea to plan a nursing kit to get you through breastfeeding. Choose versatile colours that are easy to mix and match. As a basic guide you will need to include the following items to get you started:
2-3 good quality nursing bras
1 pair of PJs or nightie for night feeds
3 comfortable breastfeeding tops for everyday
1 dressy top or nursing dress for special outings
Quality Fabrics
Choose quality and easy-care fabrics that feel soft against the skin and will last frequent washing. The addition of spandex or lycra to a fabric will also help the garment adjust to your changing shape. Natural fibres are best for bras and sleepwear while soft jersey and cotton/spandex fabrics are great for tops and dresses.
Accessories for a unique look
Adding stylish accessories is a cheap and cheerful way to create a modern look. Funky necklaces, bangles and scarves will keep your look fresh and help create different outfits from your nursing wear basics. Don’t forget the must-have statement bag for all your baby needs!
Personal Grooming
Having a newborn baby means little time for high maintenance haircuts or skin care regimes. Ask your hairdresser for a stylish cut that is easy to care for and looks great with minimal fuss. Keep it simple and stick to the basics for effortless chic.
Breastfeed in style
Planning your breastfeeding wardrobe will help you to feel calm and confident when breastfeeding in public. Knowing you look good in fashionable clothing will do wonders for your self-esteem and leave you with one less thing to worry about at this exciting and hectic time in your life.

Spring is in the air!
Finally the temperature is rising and Spring is in the air. The stores are already filled with the new season’s latest fashion and just because you’re pregnant or breastfeeding doesn’t mean you should miss out on all the fun!
A leading trend for the new season is the dress – think soft, flowing styles that will take you through pregnancy, breastfeeding and beyond. The ever classic and popular wrap dress is perfect for maternity wear and will become a versatile wardrobe staple. Look for styles in soft stretchy fabrics and basic colours that can be easily dressed-up or down. The wrap neckline is also great for easy and discreet breastfeeding.
Add the latest accessories such as the must-have statement handbag, stacked bangles and anything metallic to complete the look. No longer do you have to sacrifice style just because you’re a pregnant or breastfeeding mum. Breastfeed in style...

Go Princess Mary...
It's good to see that royalty are just like the rest of us. I was reading a newspaper article today about Denmark's Princess Mary in New York. She has 5 month old daughter Isabella with her who she is still breastfeeding. Go Mary! It's great to see a royal role model for breastfeeding. She said she was up very early in the morning going for walks with the baby. Kinda makes me pleased that royalty also suffer from sleep deprivation like the rest of us!
I wonder if she wears breastfeeding tops? Hmmmm. Maybe she needs some new Nuvo designs!

Helping mums to breastfeed
This article that appeared in The Courier Mail 27 March 2007 (click picture to view) is an interesting read on some of the reasons women stop breastfeeding early. A parliamentary inquiry in breastfeeding is examining these reasons as the inquiry was told the health benefits of mother's milk could save millions of dollars. Some of the major reasons for stopping early were a lack of support, lack of information and sense that breastfeeding is frowned upon in public.
What do you think? It raises some important issue for breastfeeding mums.
To address some of this issues, in the next few months here at Nuvo Maternity, we will be including more support information for mothers, tips for feeding in public and real-life stories of breastfeeding mums. We want to support women and help increase the rates of mothers breastfeeding exclusively for at least 6 months.
